When it comes to law and order, East Texas plays by its own rules--a fact that Darren Mathews, a black Texas Ranger, knows all too well. Deeply ambivalent about growing up black in the lone star state, he was the first in his family to get as far away from Texas as he could. Until duty called him home. When his allegiance to his roots puts his job in jeopardy, he travels up Highway 59 to the small town of Lark, where two murders--a black lawyer from Chicago and a local white woman--have stirred up a hornet's nest of resentment. Darren must solve the crimes--and save himself in the process--before Lark's long-simmering racial fault lines erupt.

At the end of the story I felt overwhelming sorrow at how racism is ingrained in small towns. “Oh, what a tangled web we weave” could be the motto of this story of a black woman and people she loved in a small eastern Texas town.

With this offering Attica Locke has moved on to the terrain of crime fiction writers like Henning Mankell and Ian Rankin. Her ability to locate and ground the action of her novel in the context of the real world elevates her work beyond the everyday who-done-it, police centered crime story. A fine writer, she has the ability to capture the complexity of the socio-political world of the USA in a highly accessible, and mesmerizing fashion. I look forward to her future offerings.

Another in Locke's series of mysteries set in the south. In this novel, the author attacks the rise of the Ayran Brotherhood of Texas and the issue of race. Recommended.

I saw this recommended in a Book Riot email, as it's not quite what I normally pick up, but it was a powerful read. It's a solid mystery with flawed characters, and then there's that final twist....

Attica Locke's murder mystery is both compelling and deeply tragic. Following a humble yet strong Texas Ranger coming to grips with complicated history, the story feels as if so much is left unanswered, even though the protagonist has quite a knack for solving the crimes. While the focus is tightly on Texas and its people, this is exactly the kind of mystery book that should appeal to most Americans.
