In this seductive, wistful masterpiece, Truman Capote created a woman whose name has entered the American idiom and whose style is a part of the literary landscape. Holly Golightly knows that nothing bad can ever happen to her at Tiffany's. Her poignancy, wit, and naivete continue to charm.

Holiday "Holly" Golightly is your storybook beautiful, unobtainable girl from the big city...or at least that's the story that her NYC friends & acquaintances know. We follow the story of a young man that lives in the same apartment building as Holly. He's familiar with who she is from passing by her in the building occasionally, but that's where the familiarity stops. Through a variety of circumstances the two meet & becomes friends, as much as Holly calls anyone her friend. But in a chance meeting in a bar with a man that claims he is Holly's HUSBAND, our storyteller learns Holly's full life story, & she's not all what's she's advertised herself to be. Despite learning all of the unflattering truths about Holly, he still can't shake this desire to be near her. But all of that come to an abrupt end when Holly suddenly packs her belongings & moves away without telling anyone where she was going, with whom, for what reason, if/when she would return...nothing. And that is where the story ends, 3-5 years later, our narrator lazily dreaming about where Miss Holly Golightly might be now.

Although I wouldn't necessarily say this is a "lose sleep" kind of book, I still couldn't seem to put it down. Something about our storyteller's quest to get to know more about Holly keeps you on the hook wanting to discover Holly just as much as he wants to. And although I can't say that she would be somebody that I would count among my circle of close friends, I still found myself wishing that I could seek out people like her, bring them into my friends circle, & being the kind of friend that our storyteller seemed to attempt to be: the kind of friend that brings truth to a person that they deeply care about in hopes that they will experience a more fulfilling, more stable life. I did enjoy the ending though. Part of me really wanted Holly to reappear or at least find out what Holly is up to these days. But this is the way it needed to be. We all have people from our past that we once considered close that are now somewhere out in the world, always keeping us wondering when we might just run into them & rekindle the old friendship once again.

Age recommendation: 16 & up (profanity, promiscuous behavior)

On a scale of 1-10 stars, I give it 7.

A short novel, less than 100 pages in book form, about a rather non-interesting plot. Ok, I'll yield the story-line is interesting in a manner of speaking. The principal character "Holly" is just shy of a being a full-fledged 19 year old gold-digging prostitute, so as you might imagine there are some interesting story points possible there. Otherwise pretty much what you expect will happen to a young woman who behaves like Holly, it happens. As an audio book, it's a compromise at best, a boring plot, but well written by the author. Also the audio reader does a good job. Still, at best only modestly recommended. (Note that this selection is Capote's book in audio book form, not the eponymous Audrey Hepburn movie. The plots are noticeably different between the two versions.)
