An exceptionally moving story of triumph against all odds set during World War 2, from the acclaimed author of Jefferson's Sons and for fans of Number the Stars .

Nine-year-old Ada has never left her one-room apartment. Her mother is too humiliated by Ada's twisted foot to let her outside. So when her little brother Jamie is shipped out of London to escape the war, Ada doesn't waste a minute--she sneaks out to join him.

So begins a new adventure of Ada, and for Susan Smith, the woman who is forced to take the two kids in. As Ada teaches herself to ride a pony, learns to read, and watches for German spies, she begins to trust Susan--and Susan begins to love Ada and Jamie. But in the end, will their bond be enough to hold them together through wartime? Or will Ada and her brother fall back into the cruel hands of their mother?

This masterful work of historical fiction is equal parts adventure and a moving tale of family and identity--a classic in the making.

Excellent book. Great story about a two children during the beginnings of WWII who leave London as part of Operation Pied Piper. This story is well told, simple, yet complex. Highly recommended for middle grade as well as adults.

This is a historical fiction novel set in England during WWII. It follows 10 year old Ada, who is disabled , and her six year old brother as they are evacuated from London to the country to avoid bombings. Well written and emotionally believable, it's a wonderful book for middle school readers and families.

A wonderful story of fear, self-worth, perseverance, and love. A young crippled girl and her brother are evacuated from a horrible home in pre-WWII London to the countryside of Kent where they are left with a spinster who is still grieving over the loss of her friend and is not interested in having children.
With a nod to classics like Black Beauty, Anne of Green Gables, and Pollyanna, Bradley cleverly spins a story with heart and soul while avoiding the pitfall of trite sentimentality. The main characters are so well written you want to reach into the book to help and support them.

Recommended for 8-12 and up. Great read aloud and the audio book is wonderful for summer road trips or rainy days.

My favorite summer read so far. The book revolves around a girl, Ada and her brother. Set in the beginning of WWII, the story begins in the slums of London and then transfers to an English countryside town. The contrast between the city and countryside was startling. The book is appropriate for children (4th grade and up), but is a joy for an adult to read also. Highly recommended.

“But what do I do with them?" Miss Smith said "I've never been around children." "Feed them, bathe them, make sure they get plenty of sleep," the doctor said. "They're no more difficult than puppies, really." He grinned”
