The directorial debut of Dustin Hoffman, QUARTET is a high-drama comedy about temperamental divas and old grudges; passion and pride; romance and Rigoletto. Beecham House, a home for retired opera singers, is abuzz when the annual concert to celebrate Verdi's birthday is disrupted by the arrival of Jean Horton (Maggie Smith), an eternal diva and the former wife of one of the residents. Can the passage of time heal old wounds? And will the famous quartet be able to patch up their differences in time for the gala concert?

This movie is quite funny and moving in its telling of a story about aging and forgiveness. It moved quite slowly at the beginning, with more setup than needed. We loved the unique concept of a retirement home for aging classical musician and trained opera stars.

I liked this DVD. It has a story about 4 main characters which are aging elderly senior citizen. The script is strong. It is well acted. It is good for all ages. The story is slow moving. You may relate to the experience of the actors. I like Maggie Smith as an actress.

I thought it was kind of boring! Not much of an ending to the movie!

Wonderful actors/actresses and an interesting story, plus positive outcome, make this "oldies" film a worthy bit of entertaiment.

Takes place in an old age home for performers in England. Has a wonderful cast, lots of laughs with some serious bits thrown in. I hope you take the time to watch! I was surprised watching the closing credits and noting that Dustin Hoffman directs--great debut.

A bit slow - but enjoyable. Some fun, quirky older characters in an interesting setting (retired musicians residence).

"A must see movie for all ages" Good Housekeeping

I'll remember to pass on any movie recommendations from Good Housekeeping from now on.

The scenery was beautiful but the movie just did not get off the ground for me.

I can't imagine trying to get a teenager or grade school age child to sit through this.

And absolutely delightful movie about a rest home for aging musical performers. The plot centers around four prima don / donnas of opera past and their interwoven personal lives when they were younger at the peaks of their careers. Probably some would pronounce this slow moving, but if so, anyone who loves opera will love it anyway.

Dr. Lucy Cogan: "Why do you persist in flirting with me, Wilf?" Wilf Bond: "Because, you're a cracker. A thing of beauty. You're not a bimbo, or a chick, or any of those awful things. You're one of that rarest of species... You're a woman, Lucy Cogan." Dr. Lucy Cogan (laughing): " Well, I'm flattered, but I have professional ethics to uphold." Wilf Bond: "Aaah, throw caution to the wind. What if we were to make beauuutiful music together... Your husband would never know!" Dr. Lucy Cogan: "Well, that's reassuring, Wilf." Wilf Bond: "Think about it, huh?" Dr. Lucy Cogan: "No, Wilf." Wilf Bond: "No one will ever know!" Dr. Lucy Cogan: "I will know." Wilf Bond: "Older man... vintage wine... seasoned wood..." Dr. Lucy Cogan: "...Did you say 'wood'?" Wilf Bond: "...Seasoned!..."
