When Tony Lip, a bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley, a world-class black pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely on a book to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African Americans. Confronted with racism and danger, as well as unexpected humanity and humor, they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime.

I wasn't really impressed with this movie at the beginning. I didn't like the fighting/punching/violence and it kind of dragged, but it really picked up toward the end. It felt like something was missing, although I'm not really sure what. I think it could have had more humor and that might have made it more enjoyable. But I will say that although the ending was fairly predictable, it made the whole movie worthwhile.

Sure it can be seen as problematic but Viggo Mortensen & Mahershala Ali are so good together that you kind of just push the cringey stuff to the side. Their chemistry is excellent and some of their scenes together made me a bit emotional.

I thought I would hate it because of all the uproar about it winning Best Picture back in February, but I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Mahershala is, what, Top 5 best actors working in Hollywood today? He is unbelievable.

Well done! This was a plus film in our home. Almost wanted to immediately watch it again as soon as we watched it the first time, but refrained. We just might grab it later in the year.

I've seen most of the nominees for best picture of this year and I'm not at all surprised of this movie winning the Oscar.

During the movie, my son asked me my opinion of who of the two main actors was better. I said that it was close, as the acting was superb in this film. I later found out that they were both nominated for Oscars for their roles as best actor and best supporting actor.

A well-done movie with some excellent dialogue.

An unlikely partnership between a brawling Italian-American and a sophisticated artist, made real by two very talented actors. Does a good job of exploring racism in the early 1960s.

I would give this more than 5* if I could. It had warmth, soul, wonderful music, superb acting, and gave insight into an era in our country that some of us who lived differently in the south, needed to see or be refreshed.

Like this movie very much. I remember the days when my family use to travel to Georgia and how we could only stop at certain places for food and bathroom breaks.

I don't follow which films win awards, that's not the point of filmmaking. Awards aside, this film restored my faith in modern day cinema. A perfect picture in every way. The best I've seen in some time! Thank you to all those who made it possible.

A powerful quote, sourced from IMDB :

"Yes, I live in a castle, Tony! Alone. And rich white people pay me to play piano for them because it makes them feel cultured. But as soon as I step off that stage, I go right back to being just another nigger to them. Because that is their true culture. And I suffer that slight alone, because I'm not accepted by my own people 'cause I'm not like them, either. So, if I'm not black enough and if I'm not white enough and if I'm not man enough, then tell me, Tony, what am I? "

This quote (in IMDb) turns the direction of the film to be an inspirational comedy:

Tony Lip: You know, when you first hired me, my wife went out and bought one of your records. The one about the orphans?

Dr. Don Shirley: Orphans?

Tony Lip: Yeah. Cover had a bunch of kids sittin' around a campfire?

Dr. Don Shirley: Orpheus.

Tony Lip: ...Yeah.

Dr. Don Shirley: Orpheus in the Underworld. It's based on a French opera. And those weren't children on the cover, those were demons in the bowels of Hell.

Tony Lip: No shxt! They must've been naughty kids!
