Catherine House
A Novel
Book - 2020
Hidden deep in the woods of rural Pennsylvania, Catherine House is a college with an experimental curriculum, wildly selective admissions policy, and formidable endowment. It has produced some of the world's best minds: prize-winning authors, artists, inventors, Supreme Court justices, presidents. Tuition, room and board are free, but students are required to give up everything for the three years they attend -- summers included. Family, friends, television, music, even their clothing must be left behind. In return, the school promises a future of sublime power and prestige, and that its graduates can become anything or anyone they desire.

"You are in the house and the house is in the woods. The woods are in the house. The stairs are in the house. Down the stairs is the hallway, and at the end of the hallway is the ballroom. The ballroom is in the house. You are in the house and the house is in you."

I don’t know. I’m scared that out there, someday I’ll look around and realize forty years have passed and no one can see me. That I’m gone.

Add a CommentCreepy, disturbing, dark . . . I can handle, but I was left with SO many questions it felt like this book was rushed through to meet deadline. The premise is interesting, character development was pretty good, and the writing style engaging yet I was left disappointed. The story felt unfinished.
A strange and gothic novel! If you're into a slow growing sense of unease and suspense this is the book for you! Ines has accepted a place at Catherine House in order to escape her old life. Little does she know that inside these walls of study is a secret obsession that will steal the souls of her classmates one by one. If you've ever wondered what joining a cult might be like-- here's the perfect way to experience it from the safety of your own home!
5 stars! I hope this author writes more books. This story was delightfully disturbing and weird, with a setting so well described that you as the reader are also "in the rooms, and the rooms are in the house, and the house is in the woods." I think this story will live in my head for a while. It is an ambiguous plot though. There is a discernible start to finish plot, but a lot is also left to the imagination. Some reviews I have read were from readers who didn't like this ambiguity but I think it's a pretty interesting way to tell a story.
Meh.
Three words I would use to describe this book: Disturbing, claustrophobic, and weird. It was a very well written, quirky story ,that is a twist on a haunted house and also coming of age story. This book will not be for everyone, however, anyone who likes unique storytelling and original ideas should definitely give this book a try.
Creepy, and yes, unsettling. I read it in less than 2 days and could not stop thinking about it. I liked how it held my interest completely....would I read it again? No. Would I recommend it? Yep.
Odd and unsettling, but ultimately I was left disappointed by the ending.
Not as good as I thought it would be.Lots of scenes repeated.
This was a quick and easy read. I did feel that the story could’ve used more depth and maybe some more turns. It wasn’t quite the suspenseful thriller I had hoped.
This is one of the most unsettling intense books I have read. Did I like it? NO! But I do not like the rock musical, Tommy, either but I have seen it several times because that unsettling story stayed with me, too. Books do not necessarily need to entertain. Sometimes they are there to disturb you, to make you think. _Catherine House_ the story of a very isolated three-year college where students break all contact with their past lives to go to school year-round really bothered me. I kept hoping that it would turn into Hogwarts, but it did not. At Catherine House, kids study hard, drink hard because the booze is provided by the school. Everything is provided by the school. No one leaves it. If they are not studying, sleeping, or drinking they are having sex. And thanks to a non-conformist student, Inez, the hidden agenda is brought forward. The ending is just as unsettling as the story. Nope, did not like it, but I’m giving it four stars, because I couldn’t put it down.
