🚿 The style is most of the movie here, with gliding camera work, some split screens, a Mancini-like score, and serious shock. Downer: they used a body double for Angie Dickinson, a Penthouse model. The Gen X will be mystified to see everyone using wired telephones and film cameras like a bunch of cavemen, and even I was interested to see that in those distant times, apparently everyone in Manhattan shaved with a straight razor. It takes a lot from Hitchcock's "Psycho," up to and including a scene at the end with a psychiatrist explaining everything for you. The plot, while improbable in the extreme, isn't impossible, I guess. But it's not about the plot, It's just to let the images wash over you.

Although it is impossible to keep a 1980 film feeling altogether modern, this thriler's story and drama hold up. I can understand why this was such a significant success. Keeps you guessing and even has a great fake-out that is completely justified by the end of the film. This film is incredibly sexual in nature - so take that into account.

The library record showed that I had rated this film 3.5/5 stars but can't find my comment. So time to watch it again... and not just because of the opening steamy shower scene, the unrated version, which is edited with a body double. Excellent erotic psychological thriller thanks to the taboo subject matters and the stellar cast. Original film scripted in 1980 and still edgy today.

Classic De Palma -- hypnotically beautiful film making combined with mildly absurd story points, overdrawn characters and some equally overlarge performances. I can never figure out if De Palma's movies are campier than they are brilliant, but maybe it doesn't matter. They're always gorgeous, technically brilliant and never dull.

If you can last longer than the half-hour or so that I did at watching this over-budgeted, overly stylish B-movie "thriller", you're a better a person than I. American mainstream movies were at an all-time low, generally, in the last quarter of the twentieth century (many say they have only gotten worse since). Brian de Palma is not as much to blame for that as many another good director (or all of the suits in Hollywood at the time, probably), but his lack of imagination, mostly, doom most of his films to a long-term viewership of sociologists and cultural analysts rather than movie lovers. Criterion's two-disc release of the movie and extras rather emphasizes de Palma's weaknesses, especially in the extra that compares the uncut, the R-rated, and the network TV versions of several violent and erotic scenes; the uncut versions are inferior in every instance: too blatant, too unrealistic, less shocking. --Ray Olson

.
Badly dated and horribly written (both plot and dialog), this is an example of the kind of crap that passed for entertainment circa 1980. And I won't even go into the utter nonsense of the psychiatry vs gender stuff.
.
Somehow a nearly mute Angie Dickenson (apparently directed to shut up and strip) manages to out-act everyone else in this softcore porn/slasher flick. Michael Caine is monotone and sleepy throughout. Dennis Franz does his best impression of a keystone cop (with extra swearing but minus the laughs). And Nancy Allen... she... just plain can't act to save her life, luckily her husband was the writer/director so...

To watch Dressed to Kill is to watch art in motion. The photography is beautiful, as well as Pino Donaggio's soundtrack. The documentary about the making of the film is also well worth watching. The director talks about how the critics and the censors attacked the film, but it appears on the DVD in both edited and unedited formats. This is a film I watch just to admire the way it was put together. Noteworthy is the museum scene which is full of emotion but no dialogue, as well as the frantic subway chase scene. If you watch it once you'll probably want a second look.

Written and directed by Brian De Palma in 1980, this American erotic mystery thriller depicts the murder of a housewife and an investigation involving a young prostitute who witnessed the murder, the victim’s teenaged son, and her psychiatrist.
The murder in the shower reminds me of the famous scene of Hitchcock's 1960 film:"Psycho".
Although erotic scenes appear great, a storyline seems ill-contrived beyond the halfway point and goes too unrealistic and out-of-line simply as a gratuitous shocker.
Anyway I enjpyed it to the hilt.

*Vogue Magazine says* - "It's the Latest Fashion in Murder!"

(In a psycho-nutshell) - Dressed To Kill's story is all about a cross-dressing kook who kills for thrills..... Well, I guess there's a little bit more to its plot-line than that.

Released in 1980 - Dressed To Kill was competently directed by Brian De Palma.

With obvious expertise - De Palma certainly does a slick job, handling all of the crucial elements pertaining to terror and suspense in the story..... Here he professionally arranges them all, just so, into a neat, orderly package. And the final product comes through as a finely-crafted and highly entertaining slasher-horror flick in its own right..... (*Watch video-trailer*)

*Useless movie-trivia note* - For this film's original theatrical release several minutes of "steamy" footage was sliced (with a straight razor, no doubt) out of it before it could get its "R" rating. This "hot" footage has since been restored to the DVD version.

Oh, really? Now what makes you such an expert?

Ah.

Hey, look, Doctor, we got a brutally murdered woman here, who passed the point of being embarrassed by anything you might tell me.

I was visiting a friend.
-And who was that?
Well... it's sort of embarrassing. I'd really rather not say.
-Why?
He's married.
-What kind of building is this? Everybody's getting laid after lunch.
===
A Park Avenue whore, but you're still a whore.

When I speak of transsexuals, I tend to speak of male to female because there are a whole lot of more of them than going the other way. And an awful lot of them have real macho backgrounds. I know a police captain, a West Pointer, a couple of fighter pilots. They all, you know, most of them tried real hard.
===
For your information, she tried to kill me last night.
-Really?
Is that supposed to be concern in your voice?
-I take a professional interest in our citizens knocking each other off.
