The writing in this book was absolutely lovely and lyrical. The skill of the writing and the gorgeous use of language was a pleasure to read. Beautiful quotes by the dozens. My only complaint is that it is a slow moving book and there were a few times that it started to drag but it never lasted very long and I was pulled back into the story again. A must read for anyone who appreciates the beauty of language.

poetic language, it would be wonderful to hear read aloud by someone with a welsh accent

This is the story of a Welsh coal-mining family at about the turn of the Twentieth Century as narrated by the youngest son, Huw Morgan.

I felt a great sympathy for Huw and his entire family, in spite of the males' proclivity for fighting - settling scores with their fists.

The story was beautiful and poignant. The author's gift of storytelling is obvious. This was a wonderful book altogether.

An excellent book, incredibly eloquent and evokes much imagery and emotion from the reader. The plot itself is not the most creative or riveting, but the quality of the writing makes up for it tenfold. The astounding articulacy leaves a lasting impression, conveying so much of what other novels fail to. Beautiful, beautiful book. I highly recommend purchasing it, but at the very least, read it.
