Apparently this is a prequel to No Man's Mistress and More than a Mistress, which I'm sure I've read after reviewing the plots on Amazon. No matter. This is a good but not fantastic book by one of my old favourite authors, Mary Balogh. Plot = Lady Angeline Dudley wants to marry for love and has fallen in love with a gallant young man who rescued her from an awkward predicament. He, on the other hand, seems quite dull and practical. When he proposes to Angeline, she fears it is out of duty and refuses his hand. The rest of the book is a mild comedy of errors and misunderstandings, intrigues and misunderstood feelings. Angeline herself is a cute character but the chatter..the endless chatter....if she was real and a friend of mine, I would would put duct tape over her mouth. Nevertheless, the book, plot and characters were satisfactory but it reminds me again why I have stopped reading a lot of historical romance: it's just too much predictable formula.
